The short answer is, yes. If you have scheduled an abortion or considering the abortion pill, an ultrasound should be performed prior to a procedure or taking abortion pills.
We provide free limited ultrasounds to anyone facing an unexpected pregnancy and considering abortion. Regardless of your choice, you deserve to be able to make a fully informed decision without the added cost of an expensive ultrasound from another provider.

What can an ultrasound determine?
An ultrasound can determine:
the approximate age of a pregnancy. (Many women learn they are not as far along than they thought, or that they are further along than they thought.)
if the pregnancy is seen in the uterus
if the fetus has a heartbeat
the development of the fetus
if there is a potentially life-threatening tubal pregnancy
if there is a single fetus or multiples
Other things to learn at the ultrasound appointment:
the type of abortion that is FDA-approved and legal
average abortion costs
all of your options
if you need other medical tests done before an abortion
If you are considering an abortion, an ultrasound should be performed to determine how far along you are so you know what type of abortion you qualify for. The abortion pill is only FDA-approved up to 10 weeks after a woman’s last menstrual period.
What Can I Expect?
At your first Her Health Women’s Center appointment, we will provide a free pregnancy test. If the test is positive you will receive a limited OB ultrasound at no cost to you, unless there is a medical reason you need to go elsewhere. This will give information about your pregnancy so you can make the best decision moving forward.
Before your ultrasound appointment, the nurse may direct you to drink several glasses of water to ensure a full bladder. This can help our medical personnel see more clearly.
You can also talk about your medical history, pregnancy concerns or ask questions about the abortion pill or the various types of surgical abortions.
