It can be difficult to know why your period is late. Pregnancy is one possible reason, but it’s not the only one. If you've had unprotected sex and your period is late, taking a pregnancy test is the best first step. Several factors can delay or disrupt your menstrual cycle and many early pregnancy symptoms can feel similar to premenstrual symptoms. In addition, pregnancy symptoms are not the same for every person or with every pregnancy, so it’s understandable if you are unsure. Common symptoms for both include:
Fatigue or lack of energy
Cramping
Breast tenderness
Headaches
Bloating
Possible reasons for a missed period are:
Stress
Hormonal imbalances
Excessive exercise
Low body weight
Contraceptive use
Birth control pills, shots, implants and IUDs can all cause menstrual changes
Certain medical conditions, including thyroid disorders and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Some medications can also affect the regularity of your cycle.
