How can we help
At Her Health Women's Center, we offer testing for our pregnancy-related clients. Our testing covers gonorrhea and chlamydia, which can be performed on the same urine sample that you provide for your pregnancy tests. We also offer testing for syphilis and is done as a separate test by blood draw. If you test positive for one of these infections, a prescription is provided for you. Women who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant should be tested.
Chlamydia is the most widely reported sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Many people have no symptoms but if left untreated, serious complications can include PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), ectopic pregnancy and infertility. The bacteria can spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex.
Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted disease. Women don’t usually have symptoms until the infection has become severe enough to cause complications like PID.
Syphilis has seen a huge rise in Northwest Iowa. It is sexually transmitted infection passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore. Many times, the sore has gone unrecognized so people who are infected may not realize they are spreading the disease. Untreated syphilis can cause difficulty with muscle movement, paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness, hearing loss, dementia and death.
